Colson grazed his lips against the tender skin of my neck while running his hand through my hair. My body was angled toward him. If we hadn’t been in public, I would have straddled him. Thankfully, the high booth offered us some privacy. It was easy to forget myself with Colson so close to me.

In his arms, nothing else mattered. Not the vandalism. Not the fire. Not the break-in. I didn’t feel like Béatrice, the lawyer who had been ripped from her usual life. I was Béatrice, the woman who was being wooed by a sexy, thoughtful man.

“I have to behave,” he murmured.

“Behave?”

“I want to kiss you, Bea. I’m trying to be a gentleman and show you a good time.”

My laugh was low and soft. I was pleased that he was just as affected as me. “Then slide back over to your side, Colson.”

“Is that really what you want?” His voice was raspy, his eyes searching mine.

I didn’t want him to move away. I wanted to stay close to him, where I could see every reaction playing across his handsome face. Where I could feel the heat radiating from his body. Where I could teasingly graze him.

Reluctantly, he began to move away. I stopped his progress by dropping a hand on his lap.

“Uh-uh. You didn’t give me time to answer. I’m likely to choke again.” It was a lame attempt, but I didn’t really care.

Wasn’t this what a first date was supposed to be like? Full of excitement and furtive touches?

I hadn’t been on a first date in a long time. Not like this, anyway. I lived my entire life in ten-minute intervals to keep track of my billable hours. That inner clock was powerful inside of my head, always ticking away with impatience until I moved on to the next task. All that evaporated when Colson was near.

I didn’t want to rush. I didn’t care how many ten-minute increments rolled by. Time lost all meaning.

“We can’t have you choking. I best stay close,” he whispered.

“You’re just an all-around helper,” I teased with a breathy voice, which was so far removed from my typical courthouse power tone. “A physical therapist who runs into burning buildings for a hobby? That’s impressive, but now you can add hot-cheese savior to the list.”

Colson shrugged and blushed. It was endearing as hell, making my heart do a full gymnastics choreography.

“When you say it like that, it sounds way more exciting than it is.”

“Don’t downplay it. Seriously. If I hadn’t been so intensely pissed off at the barn fire, I would have been cheering you on.” I wasn’t about to tell him that I finally understood what all the fuss about firefighters was. Take a hot man, put him in turnouts, and watch him battle a four-alarm fire and see if your lady parts didn’t beg for some of the same attention. I pushed my hair back, needing to cool myself down from my own damn thoughts and Colson’s irresistible smile.

“It’s not just the fire or the cheese…” I licked my lips.
